TAKE A JOURNEY THROUGH LONDON’S GREEN HISTORY

Some of London’s lesser known historic gardens and green spaces are featured in a free set of walks and cycle rides just published by the London Parks & Gardens Trust.

Garden squares, churchyards, community gardens and a variety of other green spaces are covered in walks around Hammersmith & Fulham, the City, Lambeth and Southwark.

There are also two linked cycle rides around Hackney, and from Bloomsbury to Shoreditch.

The new series, London’s green heritage, has been produced with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage.

Also part of the series is a new booklet, A short history of London’s garden squares, which charts the development of squares from the 17th century to the present, and looks at the enduring contribution these green spaces have made to London’s landscape, and the challenges they have faced.

The leaflets and booklet are available free from the LPGT, or can be downloaded at www.londongardenstrust.org in a range of type sizes.

For printed copies, or large print printouts (please state typesize required) send an A5 stamped, addressed envelope, with a note of the publications required, to London Parks & Gardens Trust, Duck Island Cottage, St James’s Park, London SW1A 2BJ.

The London Parks & Gardens Trust is an independent charity which promotes the understanding, appreciation and conservation of the capital’s historic green spaces.
