The Menu has changed in the last year. When last visited in Nov 2005 the food was quite good and not to pricey. The steak was 11.95 and cooked relatively well. The Fish and Chips was about 7.00 and was very good. The sausage and mash was slightly disappointing but not bad.
The steak is no longer any good and possibly a bit pricey at 10.95. Mine was overdone and was thin. (See older version of the page to see what a tragedy this is.)

News

The previous Landlord and Landlady retired on the 27th of September 2004. It's gone downhill since.

Drinks

Full range of Fuller's beer. ESB, London Pride, Chiswick Bitter and the seasonal ale. This will be Summer Ale in the summer, Honeydew in the autumn and spring and Jack Frost in the winter. They also will have the Fuller's autumn monthly beers, such as London Porter. The beer is still of a high quality.

Also the normal range of lagers and stuff.

Food

Food is served all day till 21:00. However they can have issues when having to deal with large groups upstairs - they will only do a limited menu and it might hold up orders elsewhere in the pub. You can also get a buffet if you book upstairs.

The steak is no longer any good and possibly a bit pricey at 10.95. Mine was overdone and was thin. (See older version of the page to see what a tragedy this is.)

The sausage sandwich had large lumps of unmelted margarine in it but was fine apart from that.

Service and Ambience

The staff are mostly friendly. Its location means it can be quite full early in the evening but never too full.

The new bar manager is not very nice. I saw her telling one of the staff off in front of a bar full of customers, most unprofessional.

We didn't get brought cutlery with our meals (8 Dec 2004); not sure if this is a new management policy or if the staff just forgot.

Layout

Room on the ground floor can seat about 30 people. Tables can be reserved. There is also an upstairs room which seats 30 that can be booked out for free. They may also open the bar for you.

Facilities

The Men's toilets are clean if not a little cramped. The women's are fine too; two cubicles one of which is a little short on space but the other is fine. Wheelchair access but not to the toilets.

Other Facts

One of only 2 pubs in london to appear in all editions of the good beer guide (less than 16 nationally). Was used as the launching place of the 30th edition of the GBG - including serving the special Young's made anniversary beer, even though its a Fuller's house.

In my opinion it might lose its good beer guide status this year --bob

Supposedly a hangout of East End gangsters in the 60s. The great train robbery was allegedly planned here.
