Also the normal range of lagers and stuff.

Food

Food at lunchtime is provided by a buffet style arrangement - although the staff do the serving; Don't order food at the bar. Quite a selection of light lunch things, ranging from jacket potatoes to huntsman pie. While the menu may suggest a dish comes with chips and stuff they are quite happy to provide vegetables and salad instead. All in all it was very nice. Just what you need for lunch.

Lunch is served between 12:00 and 14:30.

The evening menu is then served from 14:30 till 21:00

The evening menu is very good and quite cheap. A very well prepared steak can be yours for 9.95. Alternatively if you go for the sausage and mash (6.50) you'll get three very nice sausages with onion gravy and some really stunningly good home-made mash. I have yet to be able to manage to eat all three sausages, though I am only small. There are a couple of vegetarian options (are you sure? The only one I remember noticing is the pasta with sundried tomatoes and cream. --Kake). Order at the bar.

Rewriting the above:

The evening menu is very good and quite cheap. A very well prepared pasta with sundried tomatoes and cream can be yours for X.95. Alternatively you could go for the sweet potato and black bean casserole with your choice of topping. There are a couple of meat options as well. [Veg Power]

The pasta is 6.25, and it's definitely the only vegetarian main dish on the evening menu. Is the sweet potato casserole a lunchtime thing? The pasta is also not particularly creamy either; I'm not sure there was any cream in it at all. This is a good thing! The pasta was al dente, fresh tasting, and with just the right amount of a very tasty sauce made with sundried tomatoes, marinated mushrooms, and black olives. It came with coleslaw, a bit of lettuce, and two pieces of garlic bread. --Kake

All in all the food is of a high standard at all times.

Service and Ambience

The staff are always friendly. Its location means it can be quite full early in the evening but never too full. The Landlord and Landlady are most amiable as well. They run a tight ship and everything is done very well.

Layout

Room on the ground floor can seat about 30 people. Tables can be reserved. There is also an upstairs room which seats 30 that can be booked out for free. They may also open the bar for you.

Facilities

The Men's toilets are clean if not a little cramped. The women's are fine too; two cubicles one of which is a little short on space but the other is fine. Wheelchair access but not to the toilets.

Other Facts

One of only 3 pubs in london to appear in all 30 editions of the good beer guide (17 nationally). Was used as the launching place of the 30th edition of the GBG - including serving the special Young's made anniversary beer, even though its a Fuller's house.

Supposedly a hangout of East End gangsters in the 60s. The great train robbery was supposedly planned here.

Just been refurbished. Didnt ruin anything. :)
