A system that allows a taxi cab passenger to use their mobile phone via SMS or voice call to register details of the cab they are travelling in, and the licence number of the driver. These details are stored by Hail-Safe, and so should the passenger be attacked later in the journey the police can quickly trace the driver and his vehicle.
Currently 80% of stranger rapes are connected to the illegal cab trade. Most of these cab journeys originate in the West End. In addition to ruining women’s lives, they are damaging your trade. Our text messaging service acts as a deterrent against assault and will give women the confidence to visit the West End more often.
We are looking for responsible businesses and individuals to help promote our safety service.
You can do this by:

New text messaging scheme aims to cut attacks on women during cab journeys

A new idea being launched across the UK on Thursday could see the use of text messaging become an important part of women’s defence against assault and rape. Currently, many women feel helpless when they are sitting in the back of a cab being taken to their destination. The firm ‘Hail-Safe’ has developed a system that allows passengers to register details of the cab they are travelling in, and the licence number of the driver. Whilst sitting in the back of the cab, the passenger either texts the word SAFE plus their cab licence number to 88800 or calls an automated telephone line (0905 080 0103) to enter details of their journey which are accepted and stored on the firm’s server. In most cases this information will never be needed, but should the passenger be attacked later in the journey, the police can quickly trace the driver and his vehicle.

“Currently 80% of stranger rapes are connected to the illegal cab trade. We believe the act of texting us will work in three ways” says the founder and Managing Director of Hail-Safe, Ceri Allen. “Firstly, if a driver was planning an assault, he would be deterred by the fact that the passenger has texted details which would be able to clearly identify him. Secondly, it will give women back their confidence in licensed cab travel, which is being systematically undermined by all these attacks. Finally, as women start using Hail-Safe widely, it may lead to more successful prosecutions because the police will have far more information to go on.’

At the moment, the police often struggle to find out who committed these crimes because drivers can speed off into the night and the victim rarely remembers the vehicle make, registration number or is unable to get a good view of the driver’s face. Consequently many victims do not report the crime, and few prosecutions result.

Last year in the London alone, police estimate that there may have been over 2,000 assaults against women being driven home in cabs. Most of these were carried out by “illegal touts” but many women naturally feel vulnerable when getting into a stranger’s car and asking to be taken home. Whilst most attacks involve women, there are a growing number of assaults against gay men.

“I don’t want people to get these crimes out of perspective as ‘taxi crimes’ are rare, but this is no consolation if you become a victim yourself. We aim to encourage people to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of such crime, just by taking a few simple steps to increase their own personal safety.” Comments Allen.
