The Driver is a modern gastro-pub and wine bar, replacing the rather seedy old dive, the General Picton.

It is well furnished, with chunky wooden tables in the restaurant and more relaxed, soft leather furnishings in the bar area. The music is kept at a background level all evening.

The restaurant is across the pub from the bar area and has a no smoking policy in effect. The menu is extensive, very palatable and well priced, but is almost completely lacking in any viable vegetarian options.

There is a large range of wines, with the house wines weighing in at around 12, glasses at around 3.

The bar offers the regulars, plus a good variety of modern East European beers. There is no real ale to be seen and cider comes in the form of Strongbow. The bar prices are slightly over the odds.

The Driver can accomodate 40+ people and caters well for medium sized groups, but seems better suited to smaller gatherings.

It is a comfortable, relaxing place to wine and dine.

Overall: 7/10
