Interchanges

Charing Cross station provides what appears to be a completely unnecessary interchange between the Northern Line and the Bakerloo Line. The reasons for this become apparent with the history of this station.

History

What is currently Charing Cross Underground station is the amalgamation of what, in 1970 were two tube stations: the Bakerloo Line Trafalgar Square Station and the Northern Line Strand Station; Embankment Station was then known as Charing Cross.

There was a plan to open the Fleet Line, linking the City with North West London via the West End. Part of these plans came to fruition in 1977 with the opening of the Jubilee Line, taking over the Stanmore branch of the Bakerloo Line; extending this from Baker Street via new interchanges at Bond Street and Green Park, to terminate at Charing Cross. The original plans were to extend this line eastwards to [Fleet Street]?.

In the 1990s, an alternative plan was hatched, to extend the line south of the river into Docklands. This is the Jubilee Line extension to Stratford, which opened in 1999. This saw the closing of the Jubilee Line platforms at Charing Cross.

Exits

There are many of these, dotted about the base of Trafalgar Square and St. Martin's Church.
