The Monument

This fireball-topped column is a Christopher Wren designed monument to the Great Fire of London of 1666. Now owned and maintained by the Corporation of London, for a small admission fee you can climb the 303 steps of the internal staircase to the small, caged-in viewing platform at the top, for which you can expect to receive a certificate. The height marks the distance of the monument from the spot where the fire started.

Admission: children under 16, £1.00, adults, £2.00. (as of October 2003). Warning: there are no stopping points on the stairway, and some may find the attempt up challenging.
