Billingsgate Market

Billingsgate Market is the wholesale fish market for London. It operates from around 5 in the morning till about 8.30 am 6 days a week (Tues - Sun). However on Sunday I believe it is only really open on a small scale for shellfish which need to be fresh. They predominantly sell wholesale although many stalls will sell some retail too. But be prepared to buy quite a lot - it's definitely possible to buy one crab or one lobster or even one bass but often you'll ask about a large lobster-sized prawn to be told the whole box costs 40. It's a bit trial and error!

Most retail customers go between 6am and 8am. From about 7.30 they are packing up so you definitely want to get there before then. There is free parking on site and a quick tip - if you're going take black bin bags and preferably a waterproof plastic box unless you want fish juice all over your car. In addition make sure your freezer is empty or you are having an awful lot of people round for dinner as it's difficult to resist the bargains!
