That's not really stemming. Take a look at Lingua::Stem -- it'd be really quite neat if you could incorporate that. I've not used the module directly, only through DBIx::FullTextSearch, but it seems to do a decent job. The other aspect is that for a really user-friendly search people should be able to just type in whatever comes into their heads and the search engine should do all the clever munging, but I think we probably need a bigger dataset and some completely novice users to get that right.
