Where To Get On

  • Eastbound, you may find that at peak times, you are more likely to get a seat at the front, as the Ealing Broadway trains fill from the back.

If you don't mind waiting, but want to be guaranteed a seat, you could always get on the empty train on the middle tracks (see below).

Terminating trains

White City station has a curious phenomenon by way of a single track down the middle of the station, with platforms either side. When a train termnates, it opens one set of doors to let people out. These are closed one by one, then a few minutes later, the other doors are opened to let people board to travel in the other direction.

At peak times if you need or want a seat, you could wait until the train in the middle opens its doors.

A derailment occurred in May 2004, on the westbound track through this station. A press release on the incident is available on http://tube.tfl.gov.uk/content/pressreleases/0408/19.asp.

One consequence of this was that westbound trains have been using the middle track, so you no longer found an empty train parked in the middle. Engineering work on Sunday 22nd of August has fixed the track problem, and trains are now using the outer westbound track again.

Late night trains terminating at White City

If your tube is not going any further out than White City, and there are no other tubes afterwards, you are better getting off at Shepherd's Bush Station as there are many more buses serving Shepherd's Bush.

Reverse Tracks

White City is one of the few sections of track on London Underground where trains pass each other on the right. The tracks cross over by Wormwood Scrubs, before you get to East Acton station.

Other ones are described in Reverse Tracks.

Tunnel End

White City is the closest station on the westbound Central Line to Central London that is above ground.

Nearby

The old Wood Lane tube station building sat a hundred yards south of the current White City station. This used to be the terminus for the Central Line; trains went around a loop to go straight back. This has been demolished to make way for building work on the Shepherd's Bush / White City shopping complex.

  • BBC Television Centre - across the road from the tube station
