The Open Guide to London: the free London guide - Differences between Version 5 and Version 4 of Viet Garden, N1 1LX

Run by the same people as Viet Hoa in Shoreditch, this is a very good, very reasonably-priced Vietnamese restaurant.

The satay tofu starter is gorgeous. Our waitstaff encouraged us to order a fish dish as one of our main courses, since the fish was “very good” that day, and she was absolutely right — we had catfish with ginger and it was gorgeous; well-cooked and perfectly sauced. She also talked us out of swapping our beef with tamarind sauce for beef with black beans and chilli, and again she was spot on. I need to come back here some time when we've not just been on a heavy Guinness session, because I just couldn't eat as much as I wanted to. The coffee was disappointing, but who cares?

Ample dinner for two — a soup, satay tofu, beef with tamarind sauce, catfish with ginger, steamed rice for two, a coffee, and two bottles of red wine (oops) was £50 with tip. Half of that was wine. [Prices as of April 2003]
