The V & A in South Kensington is primarily a museum of design, though the collections are eclectic. The museum was originally conceived as a repository of exhibits from the Great Exhibition of 1851, which accounts for some of the eclecticism. The museum's holdings include categories of useful and beautiful objects such as clothing, jewelry, metalwork, clocks, and musical instruments. The clothing collection is one of the treasures of London, featuring costume from the 17th century forward to this year's designer gowns.

The V&A also houses the [National Art Library]? web, the computer catalogue of which can be found here.
