The Greater London Authority (GLA) is the organisation responsible for carrying out the plans and directives of the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The GLA is based at City Hall located on the south bank of the Thames next to Tower Bridge.

Transport for London is the part of the organisation that is most familiar to Londoners.

The Greater London Assembly was established in 2000 to broadly replace the Greater London Council (GLC) which was abolished in 1986 with some degree of controversy.
