Wiki Discussion/Category Pages And Redundancy
During discussions of a wiki nature at a recent London Perl Mongers meet, myself and IvorW considered the collision between the category pages and their general equivalent pages. Hopefully the new wiki patches should allow us to do away with categories entirely, by allowing pages to be placed into a proper tree structure, but until then we are stuck with a cumbersome arrangement of having to write bits for Pubs and then having to point erstwhile pub locators to Category Pubs. I reckon all the non-category pages like Pubs could have their content transferred into their category equivalent, and any pointers to the old page changed to point to the category page. Titled links could be used to avoid constructions like "London has many lovely Category Pubs...". -Earle
Yes, this would work for now. And then if we move to the plus links thing, we can rename Category Pubs to just Pubs, yes? --Kake
Found a better way to do it. You can make one page redirect to another by putting
#REDIRECT [Other Page Name]?as the only content of the page. Take a look at Sandwich Shops for this in action. It is still possible to edit a page that's been turned into a redirect, if you change your mind, by munging URLs. So what I propose for now is that in the cases where we want a page both to contain content and to have a usefully-clickable title link, we put the content in [Category Foo]? and make [Foo]? redirect to [Category Foo]?. I'm going to make a start on this so I can spot any potential hitches. --Kake
Another point is that we now have two ways of linking to [Category Foo]?. We can do so with <nowiki>[Foo]? or [Category Foo]?</nowiki>. Although both types of link work, there is an important distinction between the two. Pages which are part of category Foo should link to <nowiki>[Category Foo]?</nowiki>, and should do so in the section at the bottom of the page, headed Categories:. Other pages which are not part of foo, but merely mentioning foo, should link to <nowiki>[Foo]?</nowiki> --IvorW
