Since the 1980s, the term 'university' incorporates a wider range of higher educational establishment than previously. Before this time, there were univerisities and polytechnics - all of which are now branded universities.

There are also a number of colleges, which are collectively under the umbrella of the University Of London. Many of the colleges have recently merged or been amalgamated, making them easily large enough to be universities in their own right.
