Sandwich Shop, SW7 4QN

At the northern end of Gloucester Road, this sandwich shop is imaginitively titled The Sandwich Shop (although the hanging sign misleading calls it Sandwich World), and serves a variety of remarkably cheap but good baguettes and sandwiches along with crisps, drinks etc. At lunchtimes you often get a free portion of fruit too.

The shop is extremely popular with students of Imperial College and gets extremely busy at lunchtimes with queues out the door and down the road - but this is never usually a problem because they have a very efficient system in the shop which involves you placing your order as soon as you get in the door, you then go and pay at the counter and by the time you've done that, your sandwich is nearly ready.

The speed and efficiency of it all can be quite intimidating to newcomers since you can't actually see what they are offering by the time you are asked "who's next"... but this is only a lunchtime phenomenon.

Highly recommended mainly thanks to the value for money. Baguettes are substantial and cost 2 or 2.50; pre-packaged sandwiches (prepared at the shop earlier) cost around 1.20 upwards. Throw in a free banana with your baguette and it's a bargain.
