London Bridge crosses the River Thames from the City of London on the north side to Southwark on the south side.
London Bridge has existed, in one form or another, since 43 AD.
In 1962, the preceding version of the bridge was unable to cope with the traffic, and was auctioned off by the Government. It was won by an American oil millionaire, who had it disassembled piece by piece, shipped to California and trucked to Lake Havasu, Arizona, where it was reconstructed (photo). It is widely thought that the new owner thought he was buying Tower Bridge - a common mistake.
- interesting page at the Lake Havasu Chamber of Commerce site
- 'Discovering Southwark' bridge history page, with information about mentions of the bridge by [Charles Dickens]?.
