- History: The Barnes Community Association walk around Barnes has some historical notes.
Barnes is south of the river, in Zone 2. Most of Barnes lies within a loop of the Thames, bounded by Putney, [Roehampton]?, [Richmond]? and Hammersmith. Barnes has the atmosphere of a village or small town, complete with duckpond. The high street has an excellent butcher, a baker, a cheesemonger, a hardware shop etc, but none of the big chain stores that have taken over high streets elsewhere - the closest Barnes offers to the modern retail experience is a small supermarket.
Barnes has good transport links - mainline stations [Barnes]? and [Barnes Bridge]? have regular services to Clapham Junction and Victoria and west towards Reading. Buses 209 and 283 link the centre of Barnes to Hammersmith Station, the nearest Tube stop.
There is a farmers' market every Saturday in the car-park of the Doctor's Surgery by the pond from 12pm until 4pm - regular stalls include lamb and pork butchers, organic meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, apple and pear juice and an organic bakers'.
The main attraction in Barnes is the Wetlands Centre, which is apparently a big region of marsh filled with waterfowl. It's probably very nice if you're into birds, or want to escape from the grime of central London without forking out for more than a travelcard to Zone 2. Other than that, Barnes is a lovely place to live but not much fun to visit.
