Forthcoming Buildings
This needs updating as several of the buildings listed here have been finished. Fix please
Currently under construction in London are a number of skyscrapers, including Moorhouse (119 London Wall), and especially in the Canary Wharf area in Tower Hamlets. The "shard of glass" London Bridge Tower has gained approval from local planners but is subject to a public enquiry; at 1000 feet tall it will be Europe's largest building. Reaction to the new generation of tall buildings is decidedly mixed - you can register your support at the official site, if you feel that strongly about it. There is a proposal underway to build two large towers at the Lot's Road Power Station, by the river in Chelsea, to which the local residents are deeply opposed (and rightfully so; the towers are ridiculously out of keeping with the area -- Earle).
The government seems to have a strange fascination with [Norman Foster]? and Richard Rogers, the premier exponents of the Big'n'Shiny school of architecture (Foster designed the GLA building for Ken Livingstone, who is also keen for skyscrapers to keep the City competitive).

A little way down the river from the GLA Shad Thames and Butlers Wharf have already fallen to the developers. Keep going towards Chambers Wharf, and you'll see that the locals daubed the remaining industrial buildings with "BUILD YOUR HELIPORT IN YOUR BACK GARDEN NOT OURS". Yes, in caps. -- RobertBrook
Also coming soon is the Cannon Street pedestrian bridge which will run along the side of the Cannon Street rail bridge and provide a useful shortcut across the river. The Millennium Bridge (formerly the Wobbly Bridge) is now open, and the Hungerford foot bridge opened in 2002.
