Duke Of Cambridge, N1 8JT

  • Nearest Tube stop: Angel

This is apparently the world's first Soil Association-certified organic pub, located down a side street about five minutes' walk from Angel tube station.

Four organic beers and an organic cider were on tap at the time of visiting, all at around 3 a pint. Eco Warrior pale ale and St Peter's Bitter were found to be tasty and well-kept.

The ambiance is very "Islington" -- lots of twentysomethings drinking wine and talking loudly. We were forced to whip out mobile phones and start planning a short film just to fit in. It's essentially one big room with lots of big wooden tables and chairs, and a separate (non-smoking) restaurant off towards the back. The windows are huge, so you can see who's in the pub before you go in, should you want to for some reason.

Lots of posh, nice-looking food is listed on a blackboard on the wall. Google suggests that the soup is at least sometimes vegan. Prices are 10-15 for a main course, and 5 for dessert. Banoffee pie was disappointing - mountains of synthetic cream (we dont do sythetic cream - its all 'real and fresh!! - geetie), and very little of either bananas or toffee.

No disabled access to toilets (downstairs), but the rest of the pub is flat.

The Crown in Hackney is run by the same people, owned by Geetie Singh, of http://www.sloeberry.co.uk.

(All prices valid as of June 2004.)
