September 2005 Incident

On September 6th, 2005, the webserver that the Open Guide to London runs on was attacked and compromised through a security vulnerability in the PostgreSQL database software. In the process, our database of information was completely destroyed.

Unfortunately, it seems that due to a miscommunication no recent backups of our data existed. Thankfully, we were in posession of a complete backup from several months ago. This, plus some seven hundred pages recovered from the copies made by Google as they indexed our site, have made it possible to bring the site back.

However, in the case of those copies, we have had to convert the data back from HTML into "wiki text". It is possible that this process may have left small artefacts through the restored pages, so please help out by fixing any you find. It's also probable that some pages may have slipped through the net. If this is the case, please accept our apologies - you'll have to recreate them.

The database is now backed up on a nightly basis to two on-site locations and one off-site location, so even if something else happens to our box, the data will remain safe, which is obviously the most important thing.

Thanks for your patience in this difficult time.
