Alba, EC1Y 8JD

Alba is a modern feeling Italian (Tuscan?) close to the Barbican and Moorgate and hosts the best food I could find in a week of dinners withing walking distance of the slightly comical Barbican Thistle City hotel. I went in fairly early (6:30 ish) so it was fairly empty, but they were entirely happy to have me there and got the attention level just right (eating by yourself can be highly annoying if you're hassled too much, or too little).

I ate from the set menu and paid £15 once (excellent) coffee and a non-alcoholic drink were included. For the starter was a thick and creamy pea soup in a nice thick bowl which kept it hot right through to the very last drop. For my main course I had chicken and interesting roast potatoes with a pulpy tomato sauce. The chicken was juicy, the sweet sauce just right for it. I also had a plate of salad, which was dressed but not too strongly. Only downside is the view of the local Sainsbury's over the road but the paintings on the walls were captivating and made up for this.

The menu seems varied, and there are plenty of vegetarian options. They tell me they are happy with vegans.
