[grubstreet] Noobies, anonymous contributions and the front page

However, the anonymity can be annoying - especially when I want to post a
message to Jo Noobie to thank him/her for an excellent contribution. I don't
think we should _force_ people to log on, there's also the issue of requiring
cookies to authenticate properly, which is a bone of contention with some.

One way of encouraging people is to show the user ID on the front page recent
changes. Does the RSS feed have this information? But, if no ID has been set, I
think it should not show an ID at all - definitely not the IP address, as this looks
much too scary :o. It could show "Anon." or "Guest user" or somesuch; how about
"Guessed user" as a kind of in-joke ;).

Anyway, I also want to draw attention to the fact that we have had a visitation
from Tarquin advising us that the URL for WikiPedia has changed, tho the old one
still works. See http://grault.net/cgi-bin/grubstreet.pl?InterWiki

Stay cool,

Ivor.
